Unexpected Pregnancy Awareness Installation

Audience: 18-30 year old females

Project Description: Install an installation piece that would promote awareness to a specific audience. The idea of focusing the project on unexpected pregnancy occurred when the designer read a shocking fact about unexpected pregnancy in her age group – she wanted to continue to raise awareness to others. The installation shown above was the second installation to occur.

During the first installation a lot was learned. It was first placed inside a dorm room lobby, where the initial sought out target could be located: male and females, ages 18-24. After watching and collecting data of who would walk up to the installation and participate with it, it became clearer that the target audience was not male but female. Males were not as willing to interact with the piece (the subject is encouraged to reach in through the zipper to pull out a “package”). The results may have been different if the text was on a female pair of jeans and not a male’s but ultimately the target audience became female on the second installation.

During the second installation, the graphics on the pants and poster were redesigned to read more as a campaign and to help with the understanding of the campaign. This time it was placed in a women’s restroom in a bar in a college town. This location not only limited the crowd to be strictly female but also it is a place where “bad” decision-making may begin. This audience responded much more willingly. They were more likely to read and follow through with the instructions of the installation.

Once the subject reached in through the zipper area like instructed they would either pull out a condom, to encourage safe sex, or a baby bottle with an educational and shocking fact about unexpected pregnancies. The facts were targeted towards the specific audience. For example one fact read, “Congratulations! You had unprotected sex and you are now a college student with a baby on the way and the odds are against you! You have less than a 3% chance of graduating college. Parenting is a full time job, no college education required. Good luck!”

Overall the installation was a memorable experience that promoted awareness about a social issue, conquering its original goal.
